Glen Affric, Scottish Highlands, mountains, lochs, landscape photography

Not only will we have wide open vistas but the River Affric is one of the central features of the day, providing us with opportunities to expand the photographic potential. Use the river as a backdrop, freeze the motion, slow it down to silky smoothness, capture the mood or display the power - there is plenty of scope here.

I offer tuition in landscape photography techniques; from scenic viewpoints to capture the sense of location and place, to more discrete settings to further refine your techniques. We'll use perspective and viewpoints to explore creative composition

This is a great workshop both for beginners and those looking for more advanced techniques. We'll look at the use of filters, contrasting light conditions and how to set up your camera for best results and the location is perfect for tuition in composition, perspective and the use of light.

Throughout the day I will provide tuition in the technical use of your camera. Shutter speeds, the use of filters and appropriate lens choice will contribute to your technical knowledge and understanding.

Bring along your tripod, filters and your choice of lenses.

This workshop is graded as "Green" or "Easy". We may walk up to 5km during the course of the day to allow for maximum benefit from the venue. Suitable footwear and outdoor cothing should be worn.

In an outdoor environment close to a river, there will be safety factors to consider. These will be advised at the start of the day.

This series of workshops can be run as full or half day sessions. Timings may vary in some locations to allow us to make best use of light, particularly if sunset and sunrise options are possible.

We normally meet at, or close to, the location. Meeting points and times will be advised at the time of booking. Starting with an overview of the day, I'm always keen to understand what you would like to achieve during the Workshop - this ensures that we maximise the benefits of the day. However, I also have many ideas and options for you and there is always scope for blending your ideas and my suggestions.

We will normally cover several viewpoints during the workshop, all within easy reach of the meeting point.

Glen Affric Photography Workshop Essentials

Please make sure that you bring sufficient warm and waterproof clothing with you and appropriate footwear for forest walks and a day in the outdoors. As we may be out for a full day it's best to be warm and comfortable.

For full day workshops, please bring food and liquid with you sufficient for the day. We may make use of coffee shops for hot drinks depending on the location.

When it comes to photography equiment, there are a few essentials but after that, you have lots of choice. We're never too far away from a car so there's always scope for leaving kit securely whilst we're out and about.

The absolute essentials (apart from your camera of course) are:

  • Tripod
  • Spare Batteries
  • Remote control
  • Spare memory card(s)
  • Lens cloth
  • Wide angle lenses are great for capturing the mood and the atmosphere of these particular locations but longer lenses are useful for capturing the distant mountains.

Neutral density filters are a great way of slowing down the action of the mighty River Affric and graduated filters will bring out the detail in the sky. Polarising filters are great for sunny days and reflective water.

Booking is very simple... if you would like a 1 to 1 course, then simply give me a call or drop me an email and we'll arrange a suitable date.

If you have a group of like minded friends or would like a day's photography tuition with a pal or a partner, please call me or email me with your preferred dates and we'll put some plans together.

I advertise dates every so often and you'll find these on my Facebook Page. Keep an eye out for dates throughout the year.

All I ask at the time of booking is for a Booking Form to be completed and for a £20 deposit, with the balance two weeks prior to the Workshop.

Remember that I have Gift Vouchers available too if you'd like to give a unique present for someone special! For further details please Contact Me.

And finally.... If the weather doesn't play ball with us on your chosen date, I will always offer a choice of rescheduled dates. If, for any reason, these don't suit you, I simply refund you.

When making Bookings please download and complete my Online Booking Form. When you have completed the form, simply email or post it to me, along with your deposit and we will arrange your Workshop.

My Terms and Conditions and all the small print are provided for you on the Booking Form.

Most of my photography Workshops are run in an Outdoor Environment with straightforward hiking on paths and maintained trails. As a qualified Mountain Leader and Sea Kayak Leader, some the Workshops I offer are based in mountainous terrain or on the sea and therefore may be more demanding, both in terms of physical effort and being comfortable in the environment.

To make it easy to plan your Workshop, they are graded to help you to choose the right level for you.

Green graded Workshops are the easiest and are low level walks, including coastal paths and glens. Some workshops may be based close to the roadside, whilst others may involve a walk of up to two miles. For sea kayaking, you may be new to this activity and we will stay close to shore and easy landings.

Blue graded Workshops will offer longer walks in mountainous areas or sea kayaking in coastal areas. Expect to climb the summit of a hill or explore the coast by sea kayak. Be prepared for some moderate changes in weather and we will always prepare accordingly. You should have some previous experience walking in the mountains or in a sea kayak.

Red graded Workshops may see us wild camping on the mountains in order to capture sunsets and sunrises. For sea kayaking, we may have a more challenging day with longer crossings and perhaps wild camping as part of our adventure. You should have experience of wild camping in the mountains and, for sea kayaking, be a competent sea kayaker.

    Low Light Workshop

The longer nights through late autumn and into early spring provide perfect opportunities for low light photography. Capturing low light photography scenes can be one of the most challenging subjects in photography, yet it can also be one of the most rewarding, producing stunning results.

Lights, water and moody skies are essential elements and my workshops are based around the River Ness or at North Kessock where both locations allow for lots of scope for great results.
